A vehicle’s maximum trailer rating is only one limit. A usable combination must also stay within the tow vehicle’s payload and combined-weight ratings, the hitch ratings, the trailer’s ratings, and the ratings of tires, axles and other components.

Enter values from the specific vehicle, hitch and trailer labels or manuals. Do not use a marketing maximum from a differently equipped model.

What this planner calculates

• Loaded trailer: entered empty trailer weight plus planned trailer cargo.
• Estimated tongue or pin weight: loaded trailer multiplied by the percentage you select. This is a planning estimate, not a substitute for measurement.
• Vehicle payload use: people and cargo in the tow vehicle plus estimated tongue or pin weight.
• Combined weight: entered vehicle curb weight, people/cargo and loaded trailer.
• Margins: each entered rating minus the corresponding estimated load.

The lowest margin controls

A combination can be below the advertised tow rating and still exceed the tow vehicle payload rating or hitch tongue-weight rating. Negative output on any line means the entered plan exceeds that entered rating. Positive margins do not certify safety or legal compliance.

Verify the real setup

• Use the vehicle certification labels and owner’s manual for the exact configuration.
• Include passengers, tools, aftermarket equipment and cargo carried in the vehicle.
• Use the trailer’s certification label and an actual scale weight when possible.
• Confirm receiver, ball mount, ball, coupler, weight-distribution equipment and gooseneck/fifth-wheel ratings separately.
• Measure actual tongue, pin and axle loads after loading. Load position changes those numbers.
• Confirm brake, breakaway, lighting, tire, securement and licensing requirements for every state traveled.

NHTSA describes a trailer’s GVWR as the manufacturer’s specified loaded weight of that trailer. The trailer and tow vehicle retain separate ratings. Read NHTSA’s GVWR interpretation and the towing instructions supplied by the vehicle, hitch and trailer manufacturers.
